Allow me to elaborate…it’s easy to be inspired by someone on social media living their #bestlife, wearing their confidence and originality like a badge of honor.

It’s easy to get a nice hype speech from your girls in the group chat (and honestly, if you don’t have a group chat that’s hyping you up that’s a WHOLE other situation we’re gonna have to sort out). 

What’s not easy? Showing up and leading as your full self in your business and life, 24/7, no weekends, no bank holidays, no filters. 

Because that requires removing every ounce of people pleasing, every drop of basing our value on purely performative actions, and every smidge of inauthenticity that gets in the way of true self-ownership.

If you don’t think that even the greatest “thought leaders” are struggling with showing up as their true self then I invite you to think about all of the People magazine photos of celebrities walking out of supermarkets in chancletas. 

Yes, it’s difficult to get back to who we really are underneath, and as a result we build businesses and accept jobs and paths that aren’t really for us. In fact we build entire lives that aren’t really for us. Think about it, your life is probably better suited for Amy down the street with the home and gardens subscription while you’re more of an architectural digest heaux and that’s ay-okay. 

As long as you’re willing to admit that creating the life, business, and impact you really want takes brutal honesty and some IDGAF energy.

As a Black woman who has personally suffered from the “I can do bad all on my own” narrative, allow me to say the last thing I want is for you to have to figure this all out on your own. 

I repeat: You do not have to figure this out alone. Don’t do bad on your own. Let’s do bad together. (the good kind of bad, of course)
